What this site knows about you.
We are a volunteer-run charity, and we collect as little as we can. This page explains, in plain words, what happens to your information here: what we ask for, what runs in the background, and how to get any of it removed.
CC“Who else is watching?”
Only what you choose to send.
Nothing on this page is buried. If a sentence here is unclear, tell us and we will rewrite it.
When you use a form on this site we receive what you typed: your name, your email address, and your message or membership details. We use it to answer you, and nothing else.
When you join the newsletter we receive your email address, so we can send you Sound Ideas.
When you email us directly we have whatever you put in the email.
We do not ask for health information, and we would rather you did not send it through a web form. Tell us you want to talk about your own hearing and we will find a better way to have that conversation.
Messages reach the Branch at contact@chhancr.ca, and a copy is kept in the website's own database so nothing is lost if an email goes astray. Only the volunteers who help run the website can read them. We never sell or trade any of it.
How we see what is working.
Two tools help us understand whether this site is doing its job. Here is exactly what each one does.
- Google Analytics counts visits and tells us which pages get read, which links get clicked, and roughly where in the world visitors are. It sets cookies in your browser and processes a shortened version of your IP address.
- Hotjar records anonymous session replays and heatmaps: where a page was scrolled, clicked and tapped. It masks text you type, and we use it to find the places where this site is confusing, not to identify anyone.
- Neither tool is used for advertising, and we do not combine what they collect with the messages you send us.
- You can opt out of Google Analytics with Google's browser add-on, and out of Hotjar on their do-not-track page. Both links are below.
Opt out any time: Google Analytics opt-out add-on or Hotjar opt-out. If your browser sends a Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control signal, Hotjar honours it.
Donations, translation, hosting.
Three parts of this site involve someone other than us. None of them ever sees your payment details through us.
Donating. Our donation form belongs to CanadaHelps and runs inside a frame on our page. When it loads, your browser contacts CanadaHelps and the services they use, which include Google Analytics, Google Tag Manager, Google Ads, Facebook, ActiveCampaign, and the payment providers PayPal, Google Pay, Apple Pay and Chase. Those companies may set their own cookies. Your donation and your card details are handled entirely by CanadaHelps, and their privacy policy governs that part.
Translation. If you use the language selector, your browser loads Google's website translation service and stores your choice in a cookie so the site stays in that language as you move around. Leave the selector alone and that service never loads.
Hosting. The site is hosted by Hostinger, which keeps standard server logs including visitor IP addresses, for security and troubleshooting.
Your own browser. Text size and accessibility preferences are saved on your device so the site remembers them. They are never sent to us and they do not identify you.
Ask us, and it is done.
You can ask what we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. We will not make you justify the request, and we will reply as soon as a volunteer can. Newsletter emails carry an unsubscribe link, and asking us works just as well.
We keep form messages and sign-ups for as long as we need them for the thing you asked for, and no longer than 24 months.
