This website should work for you. Full stop.
CHHA-NCR Branch is run by people who live with hearing loss, so we hold our own website to the same standard we ask of everyone else. This page explains what's already in place, where we're still improving, and how to reach us when something gets in your way.
CC“Will this site work with my setup?”
Access isn't an add-on here. It's the starting point.
This site was built by and for people with hearing loss, and it shows in the details.
Many of our members use hearing aids, cochlear implants, captions, or a keyboard instead of a mouse, and so do the people who plan and test this website. When we choose a colour, write a sentence, or add a button, we ask one question first: will this work for our members?
Our target is WCAG 2.1 Level AA, the international standard for web accessibility. We treat it as a floor, not a finish line: meeting a guideline matters less to us than whether the page actually works for you.
Already working for you.
These aren't plans. Every feature below is live on the site today.
- Text-size slider in the header: resize the whole site in one move, no browser settings needed
- Strong colour contrast between text and background on every page
- Keyboard navigation throughout, with a visible focus outline and a skip-to-content link
- Menus and pop-ups hold focus while open and close with the Escape key
- Reduced-motion support: if your device asks for less motion, animations simply switch off
- Plain-language writing, backed by a glossary of hearing terms
- Live captions at our FICS workshops for seniors with hearing loss
- Moving content, like our partner logo strip, can be paused with one press
Terms you don't recognize? Our plain-words glossary explains them.
Where we're not done yet.
An honest list. We'd rather tell you now than have you find out mid-task.
- Some photos are still being added, along with the written descriptions that go with them.
- The event calendar is being filled in for the new season, so a few listings are still on their way.
- We test regularly with assistive technology, but we won't have caught everything. Real use finds what testing misses.
If something on this site blocks you, telling us about it is genuinely helpful. It goes straight onto our fix list.
Found a barrier? We want to know.
Write to us, whatever works for you. A real person reads every message, and we reply as soon as possible.
